Memo 021 – Coaching – Breakthrough in 2025

Those running well-established companies constantly wrestle with the desire to keep going as they are (if it ain’t broke…) and the possibility of something different/bigger/better (without throwing the baby out with the bath water).

When I ask this question, I get a range of responses: a desperate wail, a bored yawn, or an excited, lit-up face. The truth is that many established companies get stuck in a rut, and we are all guilty of accepting less than what we or our companies could become.

So firstly, let’s relax; you are not alone. It’s the same for every business leader.

There is no perfect company, and the most casual peeks under the bonnet will reveal commercial and operational skid marks, so there is no need to feel embarrassed about where you are.

You know there must be a better, more effortless, and rewarding way to move the company forward, yet you can still rationalise why you are where you are. There are plenty of things to blame, excuses to fall back on, and limiting beliefs that hold you in a safe zone (which is not as safe as it sometimes feels)

So, what have you done?

Perhaps you have read books, attended seminars, or hired a coach or mentor. Maybe these have provided some real help, or instead, you might have your fingers crossed, hoping that things will magically change.

Either way, if you are still left with that itch you can’t seem to scratch or that nagging feeling that something is missing… read on.

Your context, your company, and your marketplace are 100% unique.

Other people’s business-building ideas, systems, and strategies might be interesting, even alluring, enough for you to throw money at them, but they are not yours. All the fake awards, inflation of your ego, and trusting the system will not help here. The solutions to the breakthroughs you want are as unique as you are.

The variety and scale of the opportunities and challenges ahead can feel like wading through treacle. It’s little wonder many people give up and return to doing what they have always done, surrendering any ground they have already captured.

The starting point is recognising what you are truly capable of and aren’t.

Playing small – You are the only expert worth listening to regarding your company, and I am not about to start telling you how you should run it. You already know that, even if you occasionally drop the ball.

The problem is that you are telling yourself the wrong story. Conversations are going on in your head that you can’t or won’t have with others. There are doubts, assumptions and biases that limit what you are truly capable of if you could get out of your way.

Anything, not everything – A place of overwhelm or thinking you need to learn and apply more things is the opposite of breakthrough territory. Better to focus on a few BIG changes that get the flywheel spinning. You might even know what they are (or at least have a sneaky suspicion) and have just been putting them in the ‘someday’ or the ‘too difficult’ pile.
Sort through the noise and choices to get down to the fewest big plays to find the breakthrough you seek.

A thinking partner

This will allow you to see more choices and take much more courageous action (including the bravest decisions of all: what you will NOT do).

This is the bit you can’t do on your own. Left to your own devices, you will build a strong mental case for why you can’t change or achieve bigger, better things. Working together will make your desired outcomes appear possible and allow them to happen in far more straightforward ways than you thought possible.

At this stage, I wouldn’t expect you to understand how I do what I do, believe it will work, or know if it might be right for you. Even now, you might be thinking I am a weapons-grade bellend. That’s ok. I’m not trying to win a popularity contest. My interest is finding and helping willing leaders to open a new range of choices and have the courage to take bold action in pursuit of a better tomorrow.
